All roads led to genealogy

In an effort to declutter, I’m tackling one area or job every week. This morning it was the turn of clearing out old magazines. I’m not much of a magazine buyer but do like a subscription here or there. Getting something in the post is always exciting. They generally fall into the categories of yoga, knitting and genealogy, with the latter being the biggest pile.

But of course, I couldn’t just chuck them all in the bin. I had to go through them to make sure there wasn’t an article I needed to keep. What a surprise: there was! This is the pile I’ve retained for now with pages marked for reading. They’re mainly about sources. Internet links may well have changed & DNA content is changing pretty quickly.

The “keep for now” pile

But that wasn’t all I wanted to keep. I’ve been published in these magazines over the years, so I had to go through and find those issues to keep for posterity. I’ll be adding to that pile later on this year with some articles for Family Tree Magazine (UK). I found the oldest genealogy magazine I own, so I kept that too. Irish Roots still exists of course. Fascinating to see how publishing has changed – all the inside images are black and white and kept to a minimum. And this is only 21 years ago!

Now a historical document itself

Lastly, here’s the recycling pile. This is only a few years’ worth – I remember a previous clear-out featuring a lot of History Ireland editions. You can read these on Jstor.

I’ve left myself with a nice re-reading stack, which are lunch accompaniments. If you’re in Ireland, you can read issues of Irish Roots and Who do you think you are? magazine for free on the BorrowBox app, available fpr both Android and Apple devices from the relevant store.

What genealogical & history magazines do you read or subscribe to? Tell me in the comments.
